LSIS II will provide up-to-date information needed for the selection of data on key social development indicators to monitor the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The survey will provide a baseline for the 8th National Socio-Economic Development Plan (NSEDP) and provincial development plans. It will also support the country’s graduation from the Least Developed Country status.
LSIS II follows a new set of indicators as well as the MICS6 platform and modules which are based on the SDG indicators. MICS6 will also address some of the new data requirements of the SDGs. LSIS II data will inform the planning of policies and programmes in health, nutrition and education. The resulting quality, disaggregated data will also help to prioritize resource allocations.
“Today more than ever the availability of quality, disaggregated data is critical to reaching out to the poorest and most remote people”, said Hongwei Gao, UNICEF’s Representative to Lao PDR. “I would like to thank the Ministry of Planning and Investment and Lao Statistics Bureau for their leadership and budgetary commitment”, she added.
The LSIS II will be conducted by Lao Statistics Bureau under the leadership of the Ministry of Planning and Investment. Technical support will be provided by UNICEF and USAID. A broad partnership has been established to support LSIS II, including financial support from the EU, UNFPA, USAID, WFP, Swiss Agency for Development & Cooperation, Lux Development and JICA.
