The Vanuatu 2023 MICS (Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey), conducted in 2023, offers statistically sound and internationally comparable data essential for developing evidence-based policies and programs, as well as for assessing progress toward national and international objectives. These data will not only drive Vanuatu’s development forward but also pave the way for a more inclusive society, improved public services, and sustainable development. This is particularly critical as Vanuatu faces worsening natural disasters, being among the most climate-vulnerable nations. The survey, undertaken just months after the twin cyclones in late February and early March 2023, revealed a very high vulnerability, with 9 out of 10 households impacted.
The primary objectives of the Vanuatu MICS 2023 were
-
To provide high-quality data for assessing the situation of children, adolescents, women and households in Vanuatu.
-
To furnish data needed for monitoring progress toward national goals as a basis for future action.
-
To collect disaggregated data for the identification of disparities and to inform policies aimed at social inclusion of the most vulnerable.
-
To validate data from other sources and the results of focused interventions.
-
To generate data on national and global SDG indicators.
-
To generate internationally comparable data for assessing the progress made in various areas and to make additional efforts in those areas that require more attention.
-
To generate behavioural and attitudinal data not available in other data sources.
The Vanuatu 2023 MICS was conducted by the Vanuatu Bureau of Statistics in collaboration with various government ministries and departments as part of the Global MICS Programme. Technical support was provided by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Pacific Community (SPC), with funding from the Vanuatu Government, the Government of New Zealand and financial support from UNICEF.
